May 2008 Archives

Spring sprung.

The spring issue of our twice-yearly magazine for Cornell University is finally printed. This one's a beauty, perhaps our best yet. Working with gorgeous photography — like the James Turrell cover shot (by Florian Holzherr), and the 58 images of contemporary Portuguese architecture — made an incredible difference in the overall design.

Vignelli spaghetti.

It's here in our office — the new Massimo Vignelli map. (Official title: "New York Subway Diagram.")
Here's the old one (1972), in MoMA's collection.
Vignelli explains it, in the film "Helvetica."
Michael Beirut gets nostalgic.
An interview, and some great (more graphic) shots, at Designboom.

Donald Judd woodcuts

I've been inspired by his woodcuts for years. This incredible little show at Paula Cooper closes today. In person, I noticed for the first time the fingerprints, smudges, texture of the ink on the Japanese rice paper, and all of the imperfections that make these warm, human, and of another time. The book has a nice essay by his son, Flavin. A few shots of the show.
