1975

Mobil1.jpg

There's something really wonderful about these Mobil roadmaps (c. 1975). The black typography (some kind of corporate typeface based on the wordmark?), the white space, the use of the pegasus, everything. I also stumbled upon some corporate identity history when I looked into the origin of Mobil's pegasus. Chermayeff & Geismar killed it in 1966, but did you know that it was originally adopted from Socony-Vacuum?

The screens.

Nice collaborative effort for these eight LCD information screens at Cornell AAP. They're floating and pivoting and informing in multiple locations throughout AAP.

Soulellis Studio designed the interface, Krate engineered the web-feed software and Aleksandr Mergold designed and built the screen enclosures. A Mac Mini is embedded in the frame of each screen.

And of course proper credit is due to the Cornell team that is responsible for this. That includes Aaron Goldweber, Beth Kunz, Elise Gold, Andre Hafner, Ashley Reed, Spencer Lapp and Frank Parrish, Cornell Shops, and AAP IT who wired it all up.

Cool photography of the installation on Mergold's site.

Massimo Vignelli surprised me last night @ the Type Directors Club Night of the Italians when he enthusiastically proclaimed that "the book is dead, books have reached a ceiling," and that the web is all about the democratization of culture. Of course I agree, but really didn't expect to hear these words from him. In case you missed the Vignelli Canon that circulated earlier this year, here it is. To prove his own point, he mentioned that in two months the PDF was downloaded 300,000 times.

Oh, and on being trendy: "If you're never in, then you're never out."
Words to live by.

Richard Saul Wurman and Marc Hodosh are bringing together some of the most brilliant minds in healthcare and well-being next week for a four-day old-school-style TED extravaganza in San Diego. Soulellis Studio did the TEDMED name badges, schedules, speaker booklets, sponsor signage, etc. And I'll be there, tweeting away (@soulellis).
