A hot violet postcard press check for MAS.
Hello, goodbye.

We designed a new logo for Urban Center Books earlier this year as part of our ongoing work for the Municipal Art Society of New York. You'll find it on bags, bookmarks and on the spine of the new book Unpacking My Library, just published by Yale (book design by Pentagram).
The much-loved architecture and design book store, considered to be one of the best of its kind in the US, is closing in January. MAS is moving to West 57 Street and until new retail space is found the book store will be online only. Anyone who has browsed this place in person knows how much it will be missed. Can't wait to see it reborn in 2010.
Two hits of black plus gold.

That's not JKO on the medal — it's an 1898 depiction of the "arts" designed by Daniel Chester French for the Richard Morris Hunt memorial on Fifth Ave at 70th St, across from the Frick. The Municipal Art Society of New York, founded by Hunt, used different versions of this symbol as their identity for 110 years, but today we reserve it strictly for the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Medal.
I just came off a press check for the first printed piece in this year's program. Two hits of black and metallic gold on glossy Sappi Opus with dull varnish — beautiful!
Annually.

Just finished the 2008-09 Annual Report for The Municipal Art Society of New York (full PDF at MAS.org). Bonus treat: working with amazing architectural photographer Matt Carbone of Columbus, OH to select a NYC image for page 3. Check out more of Matt's NYC images on his Flickr site.
The winners.

Tonight I'm headed to the 2009 MASterwork Awards. Each year, the Municipal Art Society of New York honors distinctive architecture, urban planning and preservation in NYC. This years' winners include The Standard Hotel, the Lion House at the Bronx Zoo, the new TKTS Booth and The Sheila C. Johnson Design Center at The New School. Soulellis Studio created the program brochure announcing the winners, and the awards themselves.
Tint book to the rescue.

Disaster averted. I suspected that the green was not going to print well (especially for the monotones) and after consulting the printer's tint book saw that I was right. The green would have been terrible. We adjusted our palette and went back to Pantone 248. I call it purple but I've been told that this is definitely not purple (!). Whatever it is, the sheet looks great.
Calendar as map.

We design a new calendar and tour map for the Municipal Art Society of New York every two months, so we've had a really nice opportunity to evolve the design of this thing over time (this is the fifth one). It gets better and better. For the first time, we've placed all events on the map, keyed only the tours, and doubled the size of the piece. And it's a totally new, redrawn map of NYC, including all parks and bridges. As usual, a great collaboration between me, Erik and MAS.
We love MAS

Lots of new work for The Municipal Art Society of New York. It's been about nine months since we launched the new identity, and we've been busy revamping their membership materials, forms, publications and a totally new bi-monthly calendar that will debut in April.
We really love working with MAS, because they get it. They understand good design (without being fussy) and they know the importance of communicating a mission with clarity. And they've got patience: it takes time to work with a new identity and let it grow into a full system. I feel like we're just about there.
Demolition not necessary
The first issue of the redesigned newsletter and tour brochure for the Municipal Art Society of New York.
New news
This is hot off of Erik's press check yesterday we'll be posting the finished 12-page newsletter and tour brochure insert soon.

More MAS.

Voice for the future of our city.
New identity, mission, tagline and annual report for The Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS). During the last year we've worked with MAS to strategically re-brand the 115-year-old NYC institution. More to come over the next few weeks, as stationery is printed, website is launched and guidelines are finalized. A nice brand moment for us (and more importantly, for MAS).
